More information about Toulon
Toulon is located at the Provence-Alpes-Côte-d’Azur region in the southern tip of France. Situated right at the shores of the Mediterranean, the small harbor town of Toulon is seen as a very strategic military location for the French Navy ever since Charles VIII of France stepped into power.
In 1494, Charles dedicated Toulon as a major port in building the French Navy. Today, the harbor town of Toulon houses the French Mediterranean Fleet and the main base of the French Navy aircraft carrier Charles De Gaulle and her battle group.
Much of the Old Toulon is still retained. Referred to as the Old Town, one can see centuries old architectural and artistic remnants of Toulon’s past. Most popular of these sculptures are the Fountains of the Old Toulon – Fontaine du Dauphin, Fontaine des Trois Dauphins, Fontaine de l’Intendance, and the Fontaine-Lavoir de Saint-Vincent. Other places of interests in Toulon include the Place de la liberté, the Vauban’s fortifications, and Fort Saint Louis.
