Top Five Unusual Ski Destinations

It’s one thing to experience one or more of the world’s most exclusive and luxurious ski resorts, but quite another to be able to say that you have been skiing in one or more of the world’s most unusual resorts. How many of your friends can say they’ve been skiing in South Africa, or Lebanon, for instance?

If you’re interested in something different, here are my suggestions for destinations you might not normally consider, which are available as specialist luxury or all-inclusive ski holidays:

1. Oukaimeden Resort, Morocco

When you think of holidays in Morocco, you probably think of deserts and camels, maybe some mosques, beaches, spicy food, that kind of thing.

But just 80 km from Marrakesh is Oukaimeden Ski Resort, three thousand meters up in the Atlas Mountains.

The ski lift will take you up to experience trails suitable for all levels, with plenty of accommodation ranging from chalets to five-star hotels.

2. Alps Ski Resort, South Korea

This resort is at the Jinburyeong plateau summit, from where you can see the Eastern Sea and Mt Seoraksan. There are lots of runs for all levels in this beautiful setting.

More of a place for people to go on holiday and do some skiing rather than somewhere to go specifically to ski, but enjoyable nonetheless.

3. Cerro Cathedral, Argentina

Mount Cathedral’s summit is at 2000 meters, affording amazing views of the Los Andes Mountain.

Smooth slopes with trails for all abilities and ski instruction for beginners is all here, plus accommodation to suit all pockets, from budget bed and breakfasts to five-star hotels, and loads of entertainment in the nearby city of Bariloche.

4. Tiffendell, South Africa

This resort is in the Drakensburg Mountains and will be strangely familiar to most Europeans since it feels and looks like many of the smaller resorts on the European continent.

Snow cannons provide ski-able snow on a guaranteed one hundred days each year at this, South Africa’s only ski resort.

5. Mzaar, Lebanon

Not many people would think of going to the Middle East for a skiing holiday, but located an hour’s drive from Beirut, the Mzaar Ski Resort on Mount Lebanon has top-rated slopes and a range of accommodation.
